Which file format does my Ricoma machine read?

.DST

Ricoma embroidery machines read .DST, the Tajima format used across commercial embroidery. DST stores stitches, jumps and colour stops but not thread colours, so the machine shows each stop in a default colour and you choose the needle. Use the production sheet in your download to set the needle order.

What size designs can my Ricoma sew?

Ricoma machines take tubular hoops for garments, cap frames and larger flat frames. As a guide, a structured cap fits designs about 50–60 mm tall and up to 110–130 mm wide, a left chest logo sits well in a 12–15 cm round hoop, and large flat frames on single-head machines reach around 360 × 500 mm.

Typical frames on Ricoma and other commercial machines
HoopSewing fieldTypical models and uses
Round tubular hoop, 12 cmAbout 80 × 80 mm of designSmall logos, sleeves and pockets
Round tubular hoop, 15 cmAbout 100 × 100 mm of designLeft chest logos, usually 75–100 mm wide
Cap frame (270°)About 50–60 mm tall × 110–130 mm wideStructured caps; low-profile caps leave less height
Largest flat frames (single-head)Around 360 × 500 mmJacket backs and large panels

Frame sizes depend on the machine model and the frame maker, so check the frame list for your machine. Round hoops are sold by diameter: the largest square that fits is the diameter divided by 1.41, minus a margin.

How do I get a design onto my Ricoma?

Copy the .dst to a USB stick and load it into the machine's memory from the touch screen. Then assign a needle to each colour stop from the production sheet and trace the design to confirm it clears the hoop or cap frame before you press start.

  1. 1Unzip the download and pick the .dst file.
  2. 2Copy it to a USB stick and load it from the machine's touch screen.
  3. 3Assign needles to the colour stops from the production sheet.
  4. 4Trace the outline to check it clears the hoop or cap frame, then start.

How big should a cap logo be on a Ricoma?

Keep it about 50–60 mm tall and up to 110–130 mm wide for a structured cap, with less height for low-profile caps. Bold shapes and capitals at least 6 mm tall work best on the curved crown. StitchMyPic's cap area (130 × 60 mm) helps you size it before downloading.
