Which file format does my Elna machine read?

.JEF

Elna embroidery machines read .JEF, the Janome format, because Elna shares Janome's engineering. JEF stores thread colours from the Janome palette and a hoop code, so the screen shows sensible colours and suggests the right hoop. If a design only exists in another format, check your manual: the list of extra formats varies by model.

What size designs can my Elna sew?

Elna embroidery models use Janome's hoops, most commonly SQ14 (140 × 140 mm) and RE20 (170 × 200 mm). Which hoops your machine accepts depends on the model, so check the list in your manual, and size the design to fit its sewing field with 5–10 mm to spare.

Sewing fields of common Elna hoops
HoopSewing fieldTypical models and uses
SQ14140 × 140 mm (5.5 × 5.5 in)Left chest logos and small motifs
RE20170 × 200 mm (6.7 × 7.9 in)Larger designs, T-shirt fronts and totes

Accessory hoops vary by model, so check the list in your machine's manual. StitchMyPic sizes the design for the hoop you pick and warns you if it doesn't fit.

How do I get a design onto my Elna?

Copy the unzipped .jef to a FAT32 USB stick and open it from the machine's USB screen. If your Elna, like several Janome models, only looks in a folder it creates on the stick, save a built-in design to the stick first and copy your file into that folder.

  1. 1Unzip the download and pick the .jef file.
  2. 2Copy it to a FAT32 USB stick, in the folder your machine uses if it creates one.
  3. 3Select the design on the machine's USB screen.
  4. 4Attach the suggested hoop and thread each colour stop in order.

Can I use Janome designs on my Elna?

Yes. Designs saved as JEF for a Janome load on Elna embroidery machines too, as long as the design fits a hoop your Elna accepts. A design made for a Janome RE28 hoop (200 × 280 mm) won't fit an Elna whose largest hoop is RE20.
