Which file format does my Baby Lock machine read?
.PES
Baby Lock machines read .PES, the same format as Brother. PES carries the thread colours as Brother palette entries and a thumbnail for the screen. Many models also open .DST, but the colours are lost, so PES is the better choice.

All about the .PES formatWhat size designs can my Baby Lock sew?
Baby Lock uses the same common sewing fields as Brother: 4×4 in (100 × 100 mm) on entry models, 5×7 in (130 × 180 mm) on mid-range machines, and larger fields such as 6×10 or 8×12 in on bigger models. The largest hoop your model accepts sets the limit — check its manual.
| Hoop | Sewing field | Typical models and uses |
|---|---|---|
| 4×4 in | 100 × 100 mm (3.9 × 3.9 in) | Entry models; left chest logos |
| 5×7 in | 130 × 180 mm (5.1 × 7.1 in) | Mid-range machines; most T-shirt and tote designs |
| 6×10 in | 160 × 260 mm (6.3 × 10.2 in) | Mid-range combination machines |
| 8×8 in | 200 × 200 mm (7.9 × 7.9 in) | Cushions and quilt blocks |
| 8×12 in | 200 × 300 mm (7.9 × 11.8 in) | Larger home models and multi-needle machines |
| 9.5×14 in | 240 × 360 mm (9.4 × 14.2 in) | Top-of-the-range machines; jacket backs |
Accessory hoops vary by model, so check the list in your machine's manual. StitchMyPic sizes the design for the hoop you pick and warns you if it doesn't fit.
How do I get a design onto my Baby Lock?
Copy the .pes file to a FAT32 USB stick, plug it into the machine and open the design from the USB screen. Baby Lock models with Wi-Fi can also receive designs from Baby Lock's software or app. Either way, unzip the download first: embroidery machines can't open ZIP files.
- 1Unzip the download and pick the .pes file.
- 2Copy it to the root folder of a FAT32 USB stick, with a short name and no special characters.
- 3Plug the stick into your Baby Lock, open the USB screen and select the design.
- 4Check the design against the hoop on screen and thread each stop from the production sheet.
Can I use designs made for Brother on my Baby Lock?
Yes. A PES file made for a Brother machine works on a Baby Lock with the same hoop size, and the other way round. The only thing to check is the sewing field: a 5×7 design (130 × 180 mm) won't load on a machine whose largest hoop is 4×4.
