Which file format does my Janome machine read?

.JEF

Janome machines read .JEF, Janome's own format, and also .DST. Choose JEF: it stores the thread colours from the Janome palette and a hoop code that tells the machine which hoop the design needs. DST loads too, but every colour stop shows in a default colour, so you have to follow a colour list.

Also in your download for Janome: .DST

What size designs can my Janome sew?

Janome names hoops by their sewing field in centimetres: SQ14 is 140 × 140 mm, RE20a is 170 × 200 mm (RE20b 140 × 200 mm), SQ20 is 200 × 200 mm and RE28 is 200 × 280 mm, with SQ23 and RE36 (200 × 360 mm) on larger models. Older machines use lettered hoops whose sizes differ by model.

Sewing fields of common Janome hoops
HoopSewing fieldTypical models and uses
SQ14140 × 140 mm (5.5 × 5.5 in)Left chest logos and small motifs
RE20170 × 200 mm (6.7 × 7.9 in)T-shirt fronts and totes
SQ20200 × 200 mm (7.9 × 7.9 in)Cushions and quilt blocks
SQ23230 × 230 mm (9.1 × 9.1 in)Some larger models
RE28200 × 280 mm (7.9 × 11 in)Large designs on bigger machines
RE36200 × 360 mm (7.9 × 14.2 in)Top models; jacket backs

Accessory hoops vary by model, so check the list in your machine's manual. StitchMyPic sizes the design for the hoop you pick and warns you if it doesn't fit.

How do I get a design onto my Janome?

Copy the .jef file to a FAT32 USB stick and open it from the machine's USB or external memory screen. On several Janome models the machine only looks in the folder it creates on the stick, so if your design doesn't appear, save any built-in design to the stick first and put your JEF in that folder.

  1. 1Unzip the download and pick the .jef file.
  2. 2Copy it to a FAT32 USB stick. If your model creates its own folder on the stick, put the file in that folder.
  3. 3Open the USB or external memory screen on the machine and select the design.
  4. 4Attach the hoop the machine suggests (or a larger one) and thread each stop in order.

Why doesn't my JEF file show up on the Janome screen?

Most often the file isn't in the folder the machine expects. Save any built-in design to the stick from the machine, look at the folder it creates and copy your .jef into it. Also check that the stick is FAT32, the file is unzipped and the name uses plain letters and numbers.

What is the hoop code in a JEF file?

The JEF header records which hoop the design is meant for, and Janome machines and software use it to suggest a hoop. StitchMyPic sets it from the design size. You can still sew the design in any hoop whose sewing field is large enough.
