Which file format does my Bernina machine read?
.EXP
Bernina home embroidery machines read .EXP, the Melco expanded format. Bernina's software often saves an .INF file (thread colours) and a .BMP (preview picture) next to it, but the machine sews from the EXP alone. A standalone EXP sews exactly the same; the screen just shows default colours.
All about the .EXP formatWhat size designs can my Bernina sew?
Bernina names hoops by size: Small (72 × 50 mm), Medium (130 × 100 mm), Large oval (255 × 145 mm), Midi (265 × 165 mm), Mega (400 × 150 mm), Maxi (400 × 210 mm) and Jumbo (400 × 260 mm). The Mega, Maxi and Jumbo hoops need one of the larger embroidery modules.
| Hoop | Sewing field | Typical models and uses |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 72 × 50 mm (2.8 × 2 in) | Monograms, cuffs and collars |
| Medium | 130 × 100 mm (5.1 × 3.9 in) | Left chest logos and small motifs |
| Large oval | 255 × 145 mm (10 × 5.7 in) | T-shirt fronts and totes |
| Midi | 265 × 165 mm (10.4 × 6.5 in) | Larger designs and cushions |
| Mega | 400 × 150 mm (15.7 × 5.9 in) | Long designs; needs a larger embroidery module |
| Maxi | 400 × 210 mm (15.7 × 8.3 in) | Large designs; needs a larger embroidery module |
| Jumbo | 400 × 260 mm (15.7 × 10.2 in) | Jacket backs; needs a larger embroidery module |
Accessory hoops vary by model, so check the list in your machine's manual. StitchMyPic sizes the design for the hoop you pick and warns you if it doesn't fit.
How do I get a design onto my Bernina?
Unzip the download, copy the .exp file to a FAT32 USB stick and load it from the machine's personal program or USB screen. Because EXP carries no thread colours, the colours shown are defaults: keep the production sheet from your download next to the machine and thread each stop from it.
- 1Unzip the download and pick the .exp file.
- 2Copy it to a FAT32 USB stick with a short name.
- 3Open the personal program or USB screen on your Bernina and load the design.
- 4Thread each colour stop from the production sheet: the screen colours are defaults.
Why are the colours wrong on my Bernina screen?
EXP stores colour stops but not colours. Bernina's .INF companion file normally adds them, so a standalone EXP shows default colours. The stitches are unaffected: follow the colour order in the production sheet that comes with your download.
