Which file format does my Melco machine read?
.EXP
Melco machines read .EXP, Melco's own expanded format, and .DST. Both store stitches and colour stops but no thread colours, so the stitches come out the same either way and you assign needles from the colour list. Your download contains both, exported from the same design rather than converted from each other.

All about the .EXP formatWhat size designs can my Melco sew?
Melco machines work with tubular hoops, flat frames and cap frames. As a guide, a structured cap takes about 50–60 mm of height and 110–130 mm of width, a 15 cm round hoop fits roughly a 100 × 100 mm design, and the largest flat frames on single-head machines reach around 360 × 500 mm.
| Hoop | Sewing field | Typical models and uses |
|---|---|---|
| Round tubular hoop, 12 cm | About 80 × 80 mm of design | Small logos, sleeves and pockets |
| Round tubular hoop, 15 cm | About 100 × 100 mm of design | Left chest logos, usually 75–100 mm wide |
| Cap frame (270°) | About 50–60 mm tall × 110–130 mm wide | Structured caps; low-profile caps leave less height |
| Largest flat frames (single-head) | Around 360 × 500 mm | Jacket backs and large panels |
Frame sizes depend on the machine model and the frame maker, so check the frame list for your machine. Round hoops are sold by diameter: the largest square that fits is the diameter divided by 1.41, minus a margin.
How do I get a design onto my Melco?
Open the .exp or .dst in the software you use to run your Melco, or send it to the machine the way your shop normally does. Then assign a needle to each colour stop from the production sheet in your download, and trace the design to check it clears the frame.
- 1Unzip the download and pick the .exp (or .dst) file.
- 2Open it in the software that drives your Melco, or transfer it the way you usually do.
- 3Assign needles to the colour stops from the production sheet.
- 4Trace the outline on the hooped garment, then start.
Should I use EXP or DST on a Melco?
Either works. EXP is Melco's native format and DST is the commercial standard; neither stores thread colours, and StitchMyPic exports both from the same design. Pick whichever your workflow already uses, and keep the production sheet for needle assignment.
